Game 22 Recap

The Cards bounced back after a tough loss Tuesday night to beat the Braves 5-3 on Wednesday.

Wainwright wasn't in perfect form but was able to do the job. He allowed 12 base runners (7 hits, 5 walks) and 3 runs (2 earned) in his 6 innings of work. The Cards' offense bailed him out though. After scoring only 4 runs in the first 2 games of the series, the Cards came to life and put together a 4 run 5th. Turns out that was enough for the W on this night.

The bullpen was shaky at times tonight, but got the job done as they have been pretty good at through the first 22 games this year. Reyes and Perez teamed up for a perfect 7th, and then came Motte. Motte just has trouble throwing strikes at times. He did record 2 outs but also walked 2 before Franklin was brought in to bail him out.

Franklin recorded the 1.1 inning save (why didn't Tony do this last night instead of letting McClellan blow it in the 8th after walking the bases loaded?). The save is his 7th this year, which puts him in a tie for second in the majors. Now I don't wanna jinx the guy, but he looks fantastic. Maybe it's the job insecurity that helps him. He knows that any time out there that he doesn't do his job, he's at risk of losing his role. He lost it last year, and I bet he doesn't want to do that again.

Now it wasn't all good news tonight. Brendan Ryan made another very slick play on the field tonight. Seems like he makes at least one every time he gets put out there lately. His bat was actually starting to look a little warmer too, as I'm sure the added playing time was contributing to that. Just as I was starting to warm up to Ryan, he goes out a pulls a hammy tonight. Looks like he's going to be going on the 15 day DL.

While most teams are off tomorrow, the Cards keep trucking on. They fly out to Washington for the weekend and play 4 with Washington. Boggs is scheduled to get his 2nd start, and I was somewhat impressed with what he brought to the table his first time out. His name makes me nervous after his not-so-great year last year.

Oh, and in UCB news, today is debate day, so you can check out bloggers squaring off on certain topics at this link.
