Game 23 Recap/April Surprises

It seems like this season is working out almost perfectly for the Birds so far. I can't believe how well they are performing. They won in Washington 9-4.

Boggs pitched just about as well as he could have. He threw 6 innings, gave up 4 runs and struck out 9. When was the last time a Cardinal starter struck out 9? You have to look back to 2006 when our old pal Anthony Reyes did it.

The real story for the Cards is the 9th inning run eruption. Coming into the top of the 9th, the game was tied 4-4. The Cardinals offense pounded another old pal, Julian Tavarez, and scored 5 in the inning. I wonder if Tavarez punched the dugout phone and busted his hand again. Maybe he has learned how to control himself since leaving St. Louis.

Pujols went deep again. Ankiel's bat finally came to life and drove in a couple of runs too. That's about all from last night. Cards send Wellemeyer out for game 2 of the series tonight.

Well....April has come and gone. The Cards have given us many surprises so far this year. A few of them include:
  • The Cards are 16-7, the best record in baseball
  • The Redbirds are leading the NL with 133 runs scored
  • Pujols has 4 steals, good for 9th best in the NL
  • Our team ERA is 3.65, 2nd in the NL
  • Our bullpen is leading the majors in saves with 9
  • Franklin has 7 of those saves, 2nd in the majors
  • 2 words - Brian Barden
I'm sure there have many other surprises - but I can't think of them right now. If you can think of another one, leave it in the comments.
