The Good, The Bad, and The Rainout:
Cards Weekend Recap

It was a decent weekend for Cardinal fans. We might as well start with Friday.

Friday: The Good
Good Guys 6, Bad Guys 2

Wellemeyer got back on track Friday, throwing 7 seven strong innings and giving up only 2 runs. Expect big things from Wellemeyer in the month of May. He got hot last year in May going 4-0 with a 2.19 ERA and was actually the NL Pitcher of the Month.

The Cards backed him with 6 runs of powerful offense. How rare is it that every run the Cards scored in this game was from a homer. Seems like last year, the only way we'd score 6 runs in a game is by stringing together about 43 singles. I like our new approach. Pujols (of course), Ludwick, Duncan, and...Thurston went deep. Thurston's shot was the first of his storied career.

Saturday: The Bad
Good Guys 1, Bad Guys 6

Well, Pineiro was the recipient of a tough-luck-loss on Saturday. Of the 4 runs he allowed in 7 great innings, only 1 run was earned. This was mainly because Pujols got the day off after the night game on Friday. Duncan, his 1st base replacement, not only went 0-4 at the plate, but also made a crucial error in the 5th with 2 outs when he dropped a pop up. His error extended the inning allowing Mr. Adam Dunn the opportunity to smack a 3 run blast.

The Cards lone run was a Colby Rasmus solo homer. Colby and Thurston both got their first career homers on back to back days. Unfortunately the rest of the Birds lineup could not solve the Nats young pitcher, Martis, and he went the distance.

Sunday: The Rainout

The Cards got rained out Sunday. No date has been scheduled yet as this was the Cards only trip to Washington this season. MLB.com says that a likely option, "will be to play a doubleheader during one of the teams' games Aug. 28-30 in St. Louis and split the gate."

That sounds like an easy decision for Washington management. In August, home games won't be that crucial because your team won't be in contention and you would be lucky to fill maybe half the seats. Might as well split the gate in St. Louis where you know it will be a sell out.

Other News:

The Redbirds start a 4 game homestand on Monday with Philadelphia. Lohse, pushed back from his rained out start Sunday will get the start against Joe Blanton on Monday.

Sports Illustrated author, Selena Roberts' book entitled "A-Rod" has had it's release date pushed forward from June to this Monday, May 4. If you haven't heard, which I'm sure you have, her book talks about A-Rod's steroid usage timeline and how he has been juicing as early as prep ball in high school and as recent as while he has been in pinstripes. You already know I'm going to be reading this one and enjoying every page.

  1. Well, it could've been the good, bad and ugly, so I'm not complaining. I know, mark this day down. I'm not complaining. No sarcastic remarks.
