Cards Bust Out Brooms and Sweep Baltimore

The Cardinals today beat the Orioles twice. On the road and then at home. At noon and then again at six.

In game one: Cardinals 6, Orioles 5

The Cards offensively rallied together for 15 hits. Joe Thurston and Jon Jay each had three hits and Khalil Greene was 2-3.

Kyle McClellan started and pitched very effectively. He went three innings and gave up only one run. Brad Thompson followed with a decent performance; three innings and two runs given up. One of the candidates for closer, Chris Perez, got his first save of the spring. However, the save was not very reassuring. In 'Izzy-esque' fashion, Perez came in to a 6-3 lead and gave up two runs. Just enough to get by.

In game two: Cardinals 3, Orioles 1

Though they were out hit 10-8, the Cards made their hits count. Ankiel, Ludwick and Duncan each had two hits including one double each. Duncan drove in two of the three Cardinal runs.

St. Louis pitching in game two did not walk a batter and struck out 10. The starter, Joel Pineiro, went four scoreless innings and gave up five hits. Top prospect P.J. Walters followed up with three scoreless of his own. In his three innings he struck out five. Jason Motte pitched the ninth to get his second save of the spring. He did give up one run on two hits in his inning of work, but I still trust him more than the Redbirds other options for the ninth.

That's all for today. Cards vs. Braves on Saturday. Wainwright starting.

Go Cards.
