And It Begins...

The official season is yet to get underway and the injury reports have already begun. So far there is nothing major to report, but these guys should not be hurting yet. They've been in light workouts for a week or two. How will they fare after 162 grueling games? (Assuming they even last that long.)

Monday's injury reports include an unusual injury to pitcher Todd Wellemeyer. Todd told reporters he had no idea what he did to irritate a crab off the Florid coast yesterday. After all was said and done, the crab clipped him on the hand between his pinky and ring finger. Nothing a good old Band-Aid can't fix though. Welly vowed return to the beach with scissors and get his revenge on that crab.

What was this stupid crab thinking? Doesn't he watch the news? Read the blogs? Does he know how scary our pitching is going to be this season? What a jerk. If he tries to attack any Cardinal again (with the exception to Thompson), I will personally come catch little Sebastian and deliver him to Joe at his shack.

Two infielders who are auditioning for open spots are also dinged up today. David Freese, who is trying to earn the opening day spot at third has soreness in his left Achilles tendon. Freese is considered the leading candidate for the position. He was sat out of the afternoon drills Sunday and took it easy today as well. Freese expects to be able to fully participate in all drills again beginning tomorrow. "I'm just waiting to see what they have to say the next couple days," Freese said. "Right now, it's precautionary."

Also feeling the pinch of the injury crab is Schumaker's number one contender and potential second baseman Brendan Ryan. Ryan is experiencing pain in his right wrist. The injury is expected to keep him out of action through the weekend. He insists that if it were the regular season he would be able to play through it, but because it is the spring, "we can take the time now."

Ryan was held out of the cages as the wrist only caused him pain when swinging the bat. He was still able to workout on the infield during ground ball drills. When asked about his sore wrists in the past Ryan replied, "The soreness came back. Bad wrists, I guess."

This injury all but gives the job to Skip, in my opinion.

Finally, newbie shortstop Khalil Greene was experiencing some stiffness in his shoulder. Tony says he should be good to go tomorrow after taking a lighter day today. He better be good to go. That's all I have to say about that.

Maybe they can move Ankiel to short if Greene can't go. We already know that apparently outfielders can play infield. We also know Ankiel is open to position change. Plus he never plays more than a couple years at any position anyway. It would be a great fit. Or maybe Oquendo will do it. Hey Mozeliak, I have middle infield experience (wink, wink).

That's all the sarcasm I have for today. See ya tomorrow.

  2. He just figured if he took out Wellemeyer, he might be able to claw his way into the rotation...ha
